| Community Events The 95th Burning of Zozobra U.S. Eagle Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the 95th Burning of Zozobra on August 30th and will be selling discounted tickets throughout the month of August.
|
| Zozobra, also known as Old Man Gloom, was created by Will Shuster who belonged to a group of artists known as the Cinco Pintores that made their way to New Mexico in the 1920s. His first creation appeared in his backyard in 1924 as a six-foot puppet and has since then evolved into a 50-foot marionette, stuffed with shredded paper, including obsolete police reports, paid-off mortgages, and divorce papers. Zozobra represents the enemy of all that is good and his intent is to cast darkness and despair over the city. He is reborn annually due to our own wicked behavior throughout the year.
Zozobra can only be destroyed by his eternal enemy, the Fire Spirit. The Spirit dances around Zozobra while waiving blazing torches and finally defeats the evil monster by lighting him on fire to be burned to ashes. U.S. Eagle wants to help relief you from your gloominess and will be offering “gloomy notes” at select branches for you to fill out. The notes will be collected and stuffed inside Zozobra’s head to go down in flames with the nefarious beast.
We also will be selling general admission tickets, express passes, and rail runner passes at the following branches:
Members receive a $5.00 discount off their tickets and non-members $2.00. Keep an eye out for upcoming social media contests for a chance to win premium viewing tickets. |
