Good Things in a Trying Year
2020 was a year most of us are glad to see over and done. While the country and New Mexico struggled with the pandemic and all its related consequences, US Eagle dug in and showed again how our core value of “people mean more” can make a huge difference in the lives of people in our communities. The following year-end summary highlights many of the initiatives your credit union took to provide financial support at a time when it was most needed.

Employee Community Engagement - In 2020, we stepped up to assist with food distribution, delivered meals, sewed masks for nursing homes and the National Guard, participated in walks to raise awareness for various causes, and served on Boards of Directors for non-profit organizations.
Emergency Action Fund - US Eagle Federal Credit Union collaborated with the Albuquerque Community Foundation and other business leaders to create the Emergency Action Fund (EAF). The first phase of the EAF focused on immediate relief with more than $440,000 provided to 93 non-profit organizations in New Mexico that provided emergency and basic human needs services to those most affected by the crisis. The second phase funded longer-term programs aimed at mitigating underlying conditions exposed by COVID-19 by providing received $25,000 to $50,000 to nine organizations.
enrichEd® COVID-19 Education Support - Teachers and students have been affected hard by the pandemic, adapting to shifting learning models, while ensuring everyone's safety and that no child is left behind. To help, US Eagle awarded ten $1,000 grants for schools in New Mexico as part of our "We Stay Strong" initiative. Funding was used for PPE, disinfection supplies, technology, and other materials to ensure a successful and safe school year. The ten enrichEd® COVID-19 Education Support grants impacted approximately 3,000 students total in these schools: - Corrales Elementary
- Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School
- Dolores Gonzales Elementary School
- Esperanza Elementary
- Heights Middle School
- Horizon Academy West
- Mandela International Magnet School
- Milagro Middle School
- Moriarty Elementary School
- Vista Grande Elementary
Giving Tuesday Initiative - In recognition of US Eagle’s 85th Anniversary and as a part of our GivingTuesday initiative, US Eagle partnered with New Mexico Gas Company to give back to the communities we serve. NMGC selected 85 households that were behind on their gas bills and US Eagle credited $100 to each of their NM Gas Company accounts.
The impact this had on those 85 households was profound! At a time when personal livelihoods are in danger, the affected households likely had tough decisions facing them as they struggled with hard choices on which bills to pay, how to feed their families, and generally, how to make ends meet. The credit of $100 to their bills provided not only a modest boost for their finances, but also a sense of belonging to a community where people help people.
While US Eagle received a good chunk of press coverage for this act, the recognition is not why we choose this method to celebrate our history. At US Eagle, we know “people mean more.” But we cannot express that commitment with any truer sincerity than how the people we were able to help, expressed it. See for yourself in the videos below. Rio Grande Food Project - The Rio Grande Food Project has been a valued partner of our credit union for many years. Every third Wednesday, US Eagle employees volunteer to help with the food distribution, repackage food, restock shelves, and prepare food boxes. Due to the pandemic, RGFP shifted to outdoor drive-thru distribution, and we helped to deliver 2,349 household food boxes to support local kids, adults, and seniors. US Eagle employees volunteered weekly to assist with food distribution and traffic control.
Casa Esperanza - Casa Esperanza has been a community partner of US Eagle since 2005. In addition to monetary donations, employees volunteer every other Tuesday to prepare meals for Casa's residents. When COVID-19 hit, US Eagle volunteers could not enter the facility to cook for the families as almost all of them were at high risk, so we shifted our support them by making monthly donations to pay for their meals.
Explora - Our newest community partner starting in 2020! US Eagle has committed to help fund the new Explora X-Studio, phase one of their Cradle through Career STEAM Learning Campus. As their premier financial literacy partner, US Eagle is also mentoring the teens participating in the program and providing valuable financial literacy workshops.
Meals on Wheels - Every week, US Eagle employees volunteer to deliver meals to the homebound to ensure Meals on Wheels clients receive needed nutrition with a friendly face.
Connected Academy - In 2019, we joined forces with other New Mexico credit unions and donated $85,000 to the University of New Mexico Children's Hospital through the Credit Union for Kids program. Our donation helped support the Connected Academy; a non-profit organization focused on providing the funding to employ an accredited full-time teacher at the UNMCH Child Life wing. This initiative keeps children being treated at UNM Children's Hospital for chronic illnesses from falling behind in school. The program offers the children a sense of normalcy during these difficult times.
