The Science Of Helping Others
A recent Wharton School study found that, during a crisis, the people who cope the best are those who help others. At a time when we many of us are experiencing stress, science offers a simple and effective way to bolster our own emotional health: to help yourself, start by helping others.
A great place to help others is at your credit union. While it may not be an option that first comes to mind, a credit union is first and foremost a not-for-profit organization geared to help others – not just a place for loans, deposits and financial transactions.
From group volunteering with us at community food banks, to serving on one of our committees or even on our Board of Directors, there are so many ways you can help our local community through US Eagle. If you have a giving spirit, we have the outlet. Check-out our volunteer opportunities online.
US Eagle also offers opportunities for our younger (and future) members through our Junior Board of Directors. There, they can earn a letter of recommendation for college or employment applications, pursue school credit for active participation and may even qualify to receive $500 at the end of the year. Last year, JBOD organized a clothing drive for CLN and a pet supply drive for shelters in Albuquerque, Farmington and Santa Fe.
Recognize Those Who Do Volunteer
Know someone who you feel is deserving of recognition for giving back and volunteering in our communities? The US Eagle Volunteer Development Committee (VDC) has created an opportunity to recognize those whose hard work and volunteerism have made a positive impact.
The VDC will recognize one recipient per month. The winning recipient will have the honor of selecting a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of their choice to receive a $1,000 donation from US Eagle Federal Credit Union.
Nominees for the Volunteer of the Month may be submitted online (useagle.org>Learn>Volunteer Development Committee). It’s your opportunity to recognize those who often quietly work in the best interests of others.
Several Of Our Previous Volunteer Of The Month Recipients
Zac Van Note
Zac’s nominator: “Zac has been working with kids ages 6-17 through Lego robotics for over 15 years and has led many teams to the state finals. Zac is a great motivator and mentor.”
Several of those who worked with Zac have gone on to careers in science and teaching. Several others are currently in graduate schools in the state of New Mexico.

Martin Duran
Martin’s nominator: “Martin goes above and beyond for his small community of Mora. He organizes a yearly school supply drive that provides a new backpack and school supplies to each student that attends Mora ISD.”
During the recent wildfires, Martin organized several drives to collect food, water and supplies for local volunteer firefighters and residents who stayed behind to help protect their lands. Often times, Martin himself drove these supplies through dangerous areas.
Martin’s $1,000 US Eagle Donation Recipient: Los Amigos Del Valle De Mora
Chantal Muhumure
Chantal’s nominator: “Chantal is a remarkable person. She is a refugee from Rwanda, and has not only worked hard to overcome obstacles, but uses her strength to help refugee women in Albuquerque.”
Chantal started the nonprofit organization called UmojaABQ to respond to the needs of refugee women in our community. It offers many resources to women to better their lives – including how to drive, GED classes, English classes, budgeting, women’s health and more. In turn, her efforts are bettering the lives for the next generation of their children.
